Moog Animoog overview using the Eigenharp Pico

Moog released Animoog today as their first synthesizer on the iPad and I absolutely love it!

This video gives a brief overview of the Animoog's features and also shows how expressive it is when played with an Eigenharp Pico over MIDI using poly-pressure.

The Eigenharp and Animoog seems like a match made in heaven since the Eigenharp is able to send three independent detailed per-note performance data streams and the Animoog is able to react to this on a per-note level. Also, the visualization of the sound on the Animoog is marvelous, it gives a great representation of what your sound is doing.

The iPad is hooked up to my MacBook Pro using USB MIDI from the Alesis iODock, the Eigenharp Pico is also hooked up to the laptop and sends MIDI from the EigenD application to the 'dock' MIDI port. This uses a small MIDI-only Eigenharp Pico setup that loads very quickly and provides 16 MIDI playing keys with poly-pressure and three independent data streams for each key (pressure, left/right, up/down), as well as two 3D controller keys that are somewhat similar to little joysticks and are sending each three independent streams of MIDI CC data also.

Thanks for watching! The time has come again to add to the ever increasing number of videos in my Live Techno Series collection. For those who don't know, this is all about producing techno using hardware.

This time around I have made a dark, loopy techno track. Setup-wise, my new Electribe ER-1 is the master clock, sending MIDI to the 909, which passes it on to the Virus. The Blofeld isn't using MIDI, it's just playing some sustained notes through the audio in on the ER-1 which is ring modulating them against a kick drum, producing a nice tweakable noise (you can hear it best at the end of the track).

The ER-1 is playing the kick drum, clap and a couple of hi hats as well, the Virus is providing the synth parts and the 909 is playing a few extra percussion parts.

This is just a short video that I made today of a track that I started in the studio. I was working on it for maybe 90 mins and enjoying jamming with it so much that I thought I would record a wee video and see what y'all thought!

The bassline and squelchy high-pass synth are running live off the Virus TI2, the pads are coming from the Blofeld and all the percussion is being sequenced in Ableton Live, with all parts being controlled by the Evolution UC33 for mutes etc. This is nothing special, just a wee mess about.. :]

I have just moved into a new recording studio in Glasgow and finally have a place to set up all of my equipment permanently and build the room of my dreams! In this video, I teamed up with Mr Copy and Vakama to have the first live jam in the studio - a techno monster running completely live on hardware - the computer was only used to record the session.

The setup is as follows: MC-909 is sequencing the Virus TI2 and providing MIDI clock to the Virus, MPC and TR-909. The bassline, the clicks and the pad in the breakdown is coming from the Virus (controlled by me and played using the Waldorf Blofeld keyboard via MIDI), the 909 sounds are coming live from the TR-909 through the MC-909 audio input (controlled by Vakama) and the MPC is playing the kick drum and some percussion, as well as the chopped dub vocal throughout the track (controlled by Mr Copy).

Let me know your thoughts on the session - we had a great time recording it, it only took 3 takes to get something that sounded really nice but I could've kept going all night... :]

I told myself this time "Keep it under 6 minutes or people will be bored". I failed.

Anyway, this time it's not really a track as such...more of a sonic meandering while I test out my new Waldorf Blofeld. The noise that comes in at the start and plays til the end is my 3rd patch I've made on it, and I have to say I'm heavily in love with the way you program this synth.

I was worried that moving from the Virus to this would be difficult what with the lack of knobs, but the big screen and the matrix actually make this easier to program in my opinion! There are a few bugs with the synth - some annoying clicking which Waldorf promise they will fix in the next update and a few other issues, but overall it's bloody brilliant, especially for the price!

In this ordered collection of noises the Blofeld is in single mode, and it gets a fair bit of tweaking. The Virus is running 4 parts - a sub bass line, another little bass note, a noise generator and a wee sine-wave beepy melody. Ableton is running a few tracks of basic percussion - I just threw these on top of the noise I was making really rather than building anything fancy. It's being controlled by my UC-33e (with my flamboyant custom overlay that I made - makes it easy to see in the dark, ya see).

This is very basic stuff really, and more of a test than a proper video but if you liked it or have any requests from the Blofeld or anything else then let me know!

It's been ages since my last live video so I thought I would post up a little jam I was playing with for an hour or two today. This is a concept track really - every sound that is in this track is made from with a sine wave or white noise. The track itself is a super-stripped techno track, using 13 parts all playing live on the Virus Ti2 which is being sequenced by Ableton Live.

Some of the parts are brought in and out using the UC-33 controller, and the rest I am just selecting clips in Ableton using the mouse. It's nothing special really - just a techno groove that I was bobbing about to!

As a bit of an update on me, things are going great just now - I've got a lot of gigs these days including a European tour in April / May and also getting the chance to warm up for my hero Alex Under at the Sub Club in Glasgow in April - amazing. PPG Waveterm A and Wave 2.2 Wavetable Synthesizer from the year 1982.

The Waveterm is the heart of the legendary PPG system and based on an old german computer called Eltec Eurocom II with Motorola 6809 processor.

- creation of Waves and Wavetables
- fourier analysis / resonator
- additive synthesis
- 8 bit Sampling for the WAVE 2.2
- sequencer / event generator
- storage of sounds on 8" disc

this first demo video shows only a few functions (creation of waves, wavetables) of the Waveterm A. more coming soon.
